Enduramark “LineGuard” A Revolutionary Concept in Long-Line Pavement Markings

The United States saw heavy snowfall this winter, with some areas receiving over 50 inches. The coming Nor’easters could bring even more snow. Traffic, rain, and snow can all impact road conditions. Snow plows and other large road equipment steadily wear down traditional line markings, reducing their visibility for drivers. Worn or absent road markings create unsafe highways and roads for the nation’s drivers, increasing accident risk.

The Enduramark Advantage

Pavement Surface Coatings, LLC’s new innovative system for pavement marking is Enduramark, a long-lasting solution for line striping. Made of polymer-modified cement, Enduramark addresses the problem of fast wear for traditional pavement markings. Enduramark uses a patented process to install reflective beads that withstand even the harshest winter and traffic for longer periods. It creates an exceptional bond to both asphalt and concrete and is unaffected by heat, cold, and UV degradation.

Traditional paint-based pavement markings have a short lifespan of one to two years. Depending on the traffic and weather patterns affecting the road, they often need to be replaced. Markings created using thermoplastic, epoxy, MMA endure longer than paint markings yet still need to be replaced after tires and plowing equipment wear them down.

Enduramark lets municipalities create enduring pavement markings that withstand heavy snow plowing and other conditions, thanks to an application process called LineGuard. LineGuard, PSC’s revolutionary line marking application process for Enduramark, creates bright pavement marks with a protective barrier. Together, these products offer state and local agencies an easier path toward safe, well-marked roadways.

The LineGuard Difference

The LineGuard process installs the Enduramark pavement marking system and creates a “rail” along both edges of the pavement marking. Enduramark is applied 8 inches wide for six-inch lines and 6 inches wide for a four-inch line. The rail design lets tires and plow blades ride on the rail instead of the pavement marking. Exposed beads are less than 15 mils (0.015 inches) below the height of the rail to maximize the retroreflective aspects.

Conventional road markings applied without LineGuard have direct contact with vehicle tires and plowing equipment, which wears down the markings quicker over time. Worn pavement markings have reduced retro reflectivity, making it harder for drivers to see in low-light conditions. This creates unsafe roads and increases drivers' chance of departing from their lane. An American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) report found that a highway death occurs from a “result of lane departure” every 21 minutes, for a total of over 25,000 fatalities a year.

Improving the Safety of State and City Roads

Pavement Surface Coatings, LLC is the perfect partner for state and local agencies needing to improve roadway safety, especially as federal guidelines change. In August 2022, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced a new rule for pavement marking retro reflectivity in dark and low-light conditions. The new rule means state and federal agencies must mark sure roads with a speed limit of 70 mph or higher meet the minimum or exceed the minimum level outlined by the agency: 100 mcd/m2/lx.

Once implemented, counties will have until the year 2026 to meet the minimum standards. Enduramark and LineGuard are ideal tools to help municipalities meet these standards and improve road safety for all, especially in areas with heavy snow activity.

Benefits of the LineGuard Process

LineGuard offers several advantages over traditional pavement marking solutions. Enduramark offers unparalleled longevity, but the LineGuard application system reduces the expense and time associated with replacing pavement markings every one or two years. With the reduced need for frequent maintenance and restriping, LineGuard and Enduramark offer a cost-effective solution that saves time and money for road maintenance crews.

With the federal regulations mandating a higher retro reflectivity minimum by 2026, city and state governments can now opt for a durable, highly reflective solution from PSC. Once applied with LineGuard, Enduramark doesn’t degrade like epoxies, thermoplastics, MMAs, paints, tape, or polyurea’s. PSC features a nationwide network of qualified LineGuard installers ready to help officials create long-lasting pavement markings.
