PaveDrain and Endurablend: An Integrated Approach to Permeable Pavement Maintenance and Durability

As municipalities and private owners continue to adopt green infrastructure strategies, permeable pavement systems are increasingly evaluated not only for stormwater performance, but also for structural capacity, constructability, and long-term maintenance. While traditional permeable pavers have demonstrated benefits in certain applications, maintenance challenges and durability limitations have restricted their use in higher-traffic environments.

The combination of the PaveDrain permeable pavement system with Endurablend polymer cement surface coating addresses these limitations by integrating stormwater management, structural performance, and surface protection into a single, adaptable pavement solution.

PaveDrain: A Performance-Based Permeable Pavement System

PaveDrain is a permeable surface system, not a conventional paver. It is constructed from Permeable Articulating Concrete Blocks (P-ACB) that interlock to form a continuous pavement structure. Each unit incorporates a patented arched reservoir, which provides both structural load distribution and on-site stormwater storage.

This arch-based design enables PaveDrain to support heavy vehicular loads while simultaneously capturing, storing, and infiltrating stormwater at the point of contact. By retaining stormwater within the pavement structure, the system reduces peak discharge rates and improves the overall storm hydrograph, often allowing projects to downsize or eliminate traditional stormwater conveyance infrastructure.

Stormwater Management and Environmental Performance

Unlike permeable paver systems that rely on aggregate-filled joints, PaveDrain utilizes open joints without aggregate infill. This configuration provides a more direct, vertical infiltration pathway, which supports higher infiltration rates and more effective groundwater recharge.

From a Best Management Practice (BMP) perspective, the system:

  • Reduces first-flush runoff by filtering suspended sediments
  • Improves water quality prior to infiltration
  • Mitigates downstream peak flow impacts
  • Supports long-term stormwater volume control

The integration of these functions within the pavement section contributes to favorable life-cycle cost performance, particularly in urban or constrained sites where conventional stormwater infrastructure can be costly or impractical.

Accessibility, Structural Capacity, and Maintenance Considerations

PaveDrain meets ADA accessibility requirements, maintaining a consistent surface with a nominal ¼-inch joint spacing between units. The system has been successfully implemented in applications requiring both pedestrian accessibility and heavy vehicular loading, including roadways, parking areas, alleyways, and sidewalks.

Maintenance requirements are intentionally straightforward. Because the joints are not filled with aggregate, debris accumulation is more easily managed. In most cases, routine cleaning with a standard municipal street sweeper is sufficient to maintain infiltration performance. Should deeper maintenance be required, vacuum sweeping can restore a significant percentage of original infiltration capacity. Individual units can also be removed and replaced without disturbing adjacent pavement, supporting localized repairs and utility access.

Installation Flexibility and Constructability

PaveDrain is designed to integrate efficiently into conventional construction workflows. Individual arched units weigh less than 50 pounds, allowing for selective hand placement where needed. For larger installations, mechanical placement is commonly used, with typical lifts consisting of multiple units per pick using standard clamping equipment.

This flexibility allows contractors to balance productivity with precision and enables the system to be configured to meet site-specific structural, hydraulic, and geometric requirements.

Enhancing Surface Durability with Endurablend

Picture1

While PaveDrain provides the structural and hydraulic framework, Endurablend enhances surface durability in environments subject to high traffic volumes, environmental exposure, and aggressive maintenance practices.

Endurablend is an ultra-thin polymer cement micro-overlay, typically applied at a thickness of 1/16 to 1/8 inch. When spray applied to concrete or asphalt surfaces, it forms a durable, bonded layer that protects against traffic wear and tire abrasion, UV exposure, de-icing salts and chlorides, and oils, fuels, and common pavement contaminants.

The material exhibits strong bond strength to concrete and asphalt substrates, low shrinkage, and sufficient flexibility to accommodate minor substrate movement without cracking or delamination.

Functional and Aesthetic Benefits

In addition to surface protection, Endurablend allows for color application and patterning through the use of stencils. This capability supports functional design objectives such as pedestrian delineation, traffic calming, and wayfinding, as well as architectural and streetscape enhancements. These aesthetic treatments do not compromise the permeable performance of the underlying PaveDrain system.

A Unified Solution for High-Performance Pavements

When used together, PaveDrain and Endurablend provide a complementary solution that addresses the primary concerns associated with permeable pavements:

  • Reliable, on-site storm-water management
  • Structural capacity suitable for vehicular traffic
  • Simplified maintenance using conventional equipment
  • Enhanced surface durability and environmental resistance

This integrated approach is particularly well suited for urban streetscapes, parking facilities, campus environments, and other applications where storm-water performance and long-term pavement durability must coexist.
